How To Banish The Sunday Scaries
Are Sundays like this for you?
One minute you're curled up enjoying a relaxing evening, and the next you hear that incessant tick tick tick of the 60 Minutes clock on TV.
That annoying sounds triggers a wave of dread, as you remember the passive aggressive email you need to respond to tomorrow morning, that demanding client who expects status updates every Monday, and that never ending work to-do list.
Dang it! The Sunday Scaries are back!
The Sunday Scaries have a way of sneaking up on us and robbing us of time that isn’t meant for worrying about work.
According to a LinkedIn study 80 percent of us worry on Sundays about the week ahead.
But by examining the thoughts that lead to Sunday night stress, we can take proactive measures to allay this form of anxiety.
Here's where to begin:
1) Ask yourself, "What is causing my Sunday night anxiety?" Get granular about what exactly you're worrying about. Is it your workload? Is it the guilt about not spending enough time with your family? Is the very real physical feelings of being rundown?
2) Choose one thing to address. You may not have much say in your workload at work. But, you DO have control over how you spend your time and energy on the weekends. Are you physically exhausted? Then, choose to prioritize sleep. Are you feeling guilty about how you spend your time? Then, do the "heavy lifting" and get real about how your behaviors line up with your values.
3) Identify if you are in burnout or just plain exhausted. Here's the thing. Burnout needs to be treated differently than exhaustion and overwhelm. And the crazy thing is, when we're burned out, we often can't see it.
