Simmering life that frog?
“People are noticing that something’s off with me.
Even my friend, who I talk to every day, told me that I don’t seem like myself.
I’m really not a moody person, but there’s so much in my day that just… ticks me off!
I figured it was just my hormones, or my age or just a stage of life. But, when others keep saying they notice that I’m not the same…. I guess I better pay attention.”
Just like the proverbial frog simmering in a hot pot of water, unaware that he’s boiling to death…
Women in burnout are unaware they are slowly dying inside.
My new client confessed that she’d been feeling resentful for a long time. But she’d been pushing it aside, because you know… RESENTMENT doesn’t feel good.
And good girls don’t do resentful.
When icky feelings like anger and resentment crept up, she told herself that she shouldn’t feel that way. That she should be grateful instead.
After all, she rationalized, she lived in a really nice house in a great neighborhood. Her kids were healthy and bright. She had an adoring husband with a good job. She worked at a great company.
So, instead of sitting in resentment… She tried to be grateful.
And when GRATITUDE felt like a slog, she felt guilty.
And I really felt for her, too.
It doesn’t seem that long ago when everyone and everything was getting on MY last nerve!!!
Something’s off.
Not like herself.
Resentful.
Experiencing guilt because she’s feeling off and resentful.
Every week I talk to women who feel the same way.
Women everywhere, of all ages, are slowly dying inside.
And we’re not talking about it!
We’ve been told that GRATITUDE will turn things around.
I disagree.
I believe RESENTMENT can be our superpower.
RESENTMENT can show you:
Where you need to show up for yourself
Where you’re people pleasing
Where you’re over-giving
Where to set boundaries
So, here’s what I suggest to my clients, and you can do it, too, when those ishy emotions come your way.
Keep a resentment log.
Record when resentment comes and what happened to cause it.
Identify where, in your body, those emotions are surfacing.
Find patterns.
Adjust accordingly.
I know gratitude is all the rage right now.
But, I truly believe it’s resentment that can be transformational.
