My life is a mess! (Ok... it's just my house, but now EVERYTHING IS OFF!)

This is “coffee maker on the bathroom vanity” level chaos.

Our main level floors are being replaced and I can hardly find my shoes, let alone my peace of mind!

With all the hammering and drilling came A LOT of sawdust! So much sawdust that our smoke detectors went off!!!

Noise! Dust! Distraction!

Our Benny is so scared of all the commotion and the only thing that seems to give him comfort is me.

And because we needed to move all of his essentials (water, food and litter box) up to our master bathroom…

My bed suddenly became my office.

None of us likes chaos.

And as I sat on my bed, rearranging how I think about my workday, it made me think of how far I’ve come.

There once was a time, when I would have beaten myself up for not being able to power through this mess.

I would have been angry at myself for not being able to concentrate and move my goals for the week forward. I might have even “chalked it up” as a complete “lost week” and threw in the towel and began day drinking (I tossed in that last one, just to make you chuckle. All the others are true.)

But, instead of my inner critic getting the best of me this week, I was reminded of the work of Dr. Kristin Neff.

Dr. Neff has researched self compassion and broken it down into three components.

  1. Recognizing that this is a moment of suffering (“This really stinks!”)

  2. Recognizing that suffering is a part of life. (“Everyone has days like this.”)

  3. Offering yourself kindness. (“What do I need this week to make myself feel better?”)

I’ve learned that there’s soooo much more to self compassion than I realized… and that it’s NOT just for woo woo, airy fairy people.

People who are more self compassionate are strong and resilient and show grit and determination in achieving their long term goals.

They feel more confident and are more effective in their careers.

Plus they are less likely to get burned out, get colds and suffer from aches and pains.

More gains? Less pain?

Sign me up!

So, if YOU’RE having one of those days (or weeks or months) too, I want you to know that you’re not alone.

Remember, my coffee machine is on the bathroom vanity.

Learning to manage my supercritical inner voice, and follow my intuition is a big part of who I am and how I coach.

I believe we all know what we want out of life, but sometimes that dream gets hijacked by our uber fast paced, “everyone wants a piece of you” culture.

That’s why I created The Life Design Retreat.
